Clare Carter-Eldridge
Graduate Student
Claire Carter-Eldridge joined the Philosophy PhD program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in Fall 2026. Carter-Eldridge is primarily interested in questions relating to human freedom in the context of the social systems in which we live. They are currently working on exploring these questions through the lens of Ancient Greek tragic theatre, specifically the work of Aeschylus and Sophocles. Historically, Carter-Eldridge’s work has focused on the extent of human agency in tragic circumstances, such as in the context of “double binds,” as well as implications for feminist philosophy, especially relating to questions of beauty and voluntary choice. Carter-Eldridge’s background in theatre performance has spurred an interest in further exploring how theatre, specifically tragic theatre, can illuminate aspects of human nature through the study of its performance and texts.
