Thalos Discusses Concept of Freedom

What is it to be free? This is a perennial philosophical question. While human beings share in common some specific ideas about what slave-hood looks like, we do not have correspondingly specific ideas of what it is to be free. Does freedom come in kinds, or in degrees? What does it mean to enjoy freedom on any given day of the week?

Mariam Thalos’s book on the subject of freedom, A Social Theory of Freedom (Routledge, 2016), addresses these and related questions. Matt Teichman interviewed her about the concept of freedom she advances in her book on the University of Chicago's philosophy podcast Elucidations:
