Welcoming New Faculty
In Spring 2014, the Department hired Dr. Kristina Gehrman to begin in August, 2014, as an assistant professor of philosophy. Dr. Gehrman works in ethics and action theory. Her interests extend to environmental ethics and philosophy of mind. She earned her Ph.D. from UCLA, to which she transferred in order best to pursue her interests after completing all but her dissertation at UC-Berkeley. She earned her B.A. from Williams College. She has been Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Miami University (Ohio) since August, 2011. Her most recent publication, “Action as Interaction,” has just appeared in American Philosophical Quarterly. The Department is thrilled to welcome her. She’ll be moving to Knoxville with her husband, Paul Nichols, a philosopher just now completing his Ph.D. at UCLA.
Dr. Samuel Duncan joined the Department in August, 2013, as a full-time Lecturer. We introduce him now because he did not decide to join the Department until after last year’s newsletter. Dr. Duncan earned his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and an M.A. from the University of Chicago. He works in ethics with a special focus on Kant. His interests extend to German Idealism more generally and to political philosophy and the philosophy of religion. He has published essays in British Journal for the History of Philosophy, Social Theory and Practice, and Southern Journal of Philosophy.
