How do you know the right thing to do in a sticky situation? Most people will face an ethical dilemma at some point in their lives, but few people will seriously reflect on how they make the decisions that they make. In an effort to get young people thinking early and often about such decisions, the Philosophy Department and the Humanities Center at the University of Tennessee are reaching out to local area high schools to participate in the Tennessee High School Ethics Bowl.

An ethics bowl is a collaborative yet competitive event, in which teams analyze a series of wide-ranging ethical issues and then present their ideas to judges and other teams in a fun and friendly atmosphere. Participation in an ethics bowl is great practice for debate and Scholars' Bowl teams, as well as students who are eager to hone their critical thinking and problem solving skills—skills that are proven to boost ACT and SAT scores and that are explicitly targeted by the TNCore standards.

We are pleased to announce that the Tennessee High School Ethics Bowl is registering teams for its sixth annual competition, which will be held on January 31, 2015, at the University of Tennessee. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis and is limited to twelve teams. The registration deadline is October 22, 2014, so now is a great time to recruit your team!
